The Beginning: The Very Best Place to Start

Hello All,

The purpose of this blog is to keep everyone informed during our surrogacy process. We are very excited to start this journey, and want to keep everyone in the loop! So before we get into the nitty gritty of what surrogacy is let's talk about how this all came to light.

Many of you know that I was born with CHD, which is a birth defect of the heart. I have a combination of several different defects, and I don't want to bore you with all the medical terms, so I'll cut to the chase. Although I would be able to have a child on my own, there are far too many risks for us to take that chance. B and I don't want to gamble with my life, so we have been seriously considering surrogacy. The issues we have run into are as follows: a stranger carrying our baby, and the cost. Thankfully, due to an act of God (and it can only be described as such), we no longer have to worry about part of that. Which leads to the most eventful and emotional weekend of our lives.

This past Saturday I went out to lunch with a family friend, and entered in a conversation that would change our lives forever. Over Olive Garden's delicious breadsticks, I started outlining all of the risks that would come with me carrying a child, and our decision to think about surrogacy. As I was outlining our hesitations, our friend blurted out, "What about me?" It's not often that a situation leaves me speechless, but I was at that moment. Of course I started to tear up, because it's not everyday someone as awesome as our friend offers to give you the greatest gift of your life. All I could think of at that point in time was "Is this real, is this really happening?" Followed by the though of "Holy explicative, I'm actually going to be a mom! Poor kid." Now I'm in full out cry mode, and she's still sitting there waiting for an answer. I'm pretty sure I said something lame like "Yeah, that'd be cool."What I really meant to say was "OH MY GOD! YOU ARE THE MOST AMAZING PERSON ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH AND YOU SHOULD BE GRANTED SAINTHOOD IMMEDIATELY." Now at this point in time, we have caught the people of the Olive Garden's attention, as I am crying and we are hugging because really, what else can you do! I'm sure we provided many diners with entertaining stories for their friends and family that day.

Now what I hadn't shared until this point, was B and I had discussed people we would ask or consider to be a surrogate and our friend that has offered is on our list. I could not think of a better person to share this experience with, and B and I are totally blessed. Our SM (surro-mom) is kind, family oriented, sweet, and like a sister to me. Not only will she take great care of our baby during pregnancy, she will be part of our lives forever as she is already family. Throughout this whole process I had been praying for some sign or something to show me what we should do. I spent hours reading about adoption vs. surrogacy, talked to as many people as I could. I'm not joking when I say, I ate, breathed, and slept alternative methods to having children. Sometimes things happen in our lives where you can clearly see God's plan. This is one of those times. I don't know exactly where we go from here, or what the next steps are, but I do know that we are excited, and forever grateful.
